Poems and Words of Insight
By Alex Cullum
Vandalism, riots, crime
Are these the symptoms of our time?
Or is it just perhaps that we
rose-tint the way things used to be?
Take some time to look around
at all the beauty to be found.
Amid lifes sorrow, care and woe
kindness lives today as long ago.

You've had a quarrel with a friend,
their words have caused you pain.
Do you decide this is the end,
and you can't be friends again?
Or does it occur to you
to try and see their point of viewAlex Cullum

The secret of contentment lies
not in things that money buys,
not in riches,not in wealth,
not in beauty, not in health.
True contentment is, though strange,
accepting things you cannot change.

After his wife Clare died, Andrew kept her dressing table exactly
as she had left it, with her make-up, hairbrush and jewellery where she had last set them
down.
His sons, Gary (14) and Sam (10), were forbidden from touching it.
But recently Andrew noticed something was missing
the
bottle of perfume that had been his last present to Clare and
which she had used only once.
Sam confessed he had taken it to school on the last day of term to
give to his teacher.
Tearfully he explained. " Everyone was taking Mrs Wilson a
present.
Last year mummy helped me to choose something, but this year I knew
you were busy, so I too her the scent."
"She did not mind that it had been opened."
"She put some perfume on her wrist and gave me a hug
and she smelt just like mummy".
Andrew quickly gave Sam a big hug of his own, and felt a guilty
pang that he'd been so taken up with his own grieving, he had not given enough thought to
just how much his two young boys were missing their Mum.
Now he realised that grief has to be shared and spoken for healing
to begin.

I talk to Mum the way I did
and tell her many things.
About my friends and family
and all that each day brings.
I have her love to warm my heart
no memories I lack.
I smile at Mum across the room.
Her photograph smiles back.

Words are Music
Words are music,
Music is for ears that hear,
Hearing is for those that understand,
Those that understand,
Know the words,
Words are music.

It's better to give than receive,
is a saying we all believe.
But of course there's a time and a place,
when receiving with kindness and grace
Can mean as much to the person who,
Is giving something nice to you.

My day was very busy,
I hurried here and there.
The hours went by so quickly,
and my heart was filled with care.
But when at last I reached my home
and was greeted with a smile,
then all that work and worry
was suddenly worthwhile.

GOOD NEWS OR IS IT ?
When Beryl agreed to marry Fred, who had been a widower for three
years, he was pleased that his son, David, who was only six years old, would have a
"Mum" again just like his pals.
But the little boy did not say much when the couple told him the good news, and he was
very quiet all the next day.
The day after that, Fred got a phone call from David's teacher asking if he could pick up
his son instead of the child minder.
When Fred arrived the teacher explained David had suddenly burst into tears during
lessons.
He sobbed that Beryl was going to take Daddy away from him and he would be left all by
himself. He'd got the idea that when people married, they had to leave home. The teacher
did her best to reassure him, but it wasn't working. Happily, after a long chat, Fred was
able to explain he wasn't going anywhere without
his little boy. Daniel now understands that Beryl is marrying him as well as his father.
They can't do it without him, because they need him to carry the ring at the ceremony and
he'll be going off with them afterwards for a holiday before they all come back together.

If someone pours their heart out
and tells you of their grief
you may, by simple listening
provide them with relief.
For sometimes, just by talking
to a sympathetic friend,
your troubles seem to lighten
and the heartache starts to mend.

When green leaves turn to golden brown
and blue skies turn to grey.
When darkness pulls the shutters down
at the close of an autumn day,
be glad this land wherein we dwell
has four seasons every year.
For each one casts its special spell
when the changing signs appear

When will laughter come again
into the grief torn lives
of those whove lost beloved ones
partners, husbands, wives.
Memories last forever,
but there will come a day
when the happy thoughts will linger
and the sad thoughts will fade awayAlex Cullum

The harvest safely gathered in
now fills the sheds and barns.
The summer rains have filled the streams
refreshing Lochs and Tarns.
The earth can take a last deep breath
before the winter starts,
and we can meet these Golden days
with summer in our hearts.Alex Cullum

Dont put off until its too late
tell those you love that you care.
for we cannot master our fate
and they may not always be there.
Dont be shy to express how you feel,
not only by deeds that you do.
And if there are old wounds you should heal
just say these sweet words,
I Love YouAlex Cullum

You say youve burned your bridges
and theres no looking back.
The future looks uncertain
and your life is not on track.
Nows the time to start again,
for this is not the end.
Remember all those happy times
and build a bridge my friend.

Golden, gilded trumpets, waving in the breeze
with my eye I perceive
and freeze
a picture in my mind,
and find,
it later when I need
a memory to heed.
Memories have a golden price,
of times gone past,
safe and nice.
Now it seems,
all thats left is dreams.Alex Cullum

Dear Lord God
give me I pray
peace of mind this troubled day.
Give me strength, the will to find
a loving nature, good and kind.
Help me in this quest,
show me how to pass the test.
Watch oer me,
lest I stray
lose the way,
and if I roam,
do not despair,
dispense on me a penance
just and fair.
For I would welcome penance
every day,
if only I could find the way.Alex Cullum

if you keep it in the shade?
Whats the point of beauty
if it cannot be displayed?
and as for good intentions
which are never carried through-
These are no earthly use at all,
We all know this is trueAlex Cullum

In times of doubt and darkness,
in the days of sorrow,
light a spark of hope within you,
build a new tomorrow.
Love is free and meant for sharing,
not to lend or borrow
let it grow like hope within you
build a new tomorrow.Alex Cullum

Everybody needs a friend,
one on whom they can depend.
To laugh with them when they are glad
and weep with them when they are sad.
A friend to whom they can impart
those little secrets of the heart.
Or simply have a little chat
each person needs a friend like that.Alex Cullum

Lets lay this sad old year to rest
and welcome in the new,
resolving that well do our best
In year 2002.
May everyone within their heart
let love and kindness reign,
so we can make a brave new start
and live in peace again.Alex Cullum

Some people only sit and think that,
the world owes them a living.
While there are those who spend each day,
In helping and in giving.
Which ones are the happiest?
The people warm and caring,
who lend a hand and spare a smile.
This life was made for sharing.Alex Cullum

Dont be afraid to be happy
laughter is good for you.
Dont feel guilt when youre cheerful,
your joy may be long overdue.
If youve been through times of hardship
and perhaps grown accustomed to woe,
Then relax and enjoy youre good fortune,
Lifes great when you let yourself go.

Every hour of every day,
has its place, and then fades away.
Nothing we may do can force
that fleeting time to change its course.
But in our memories well hold
these precious hours as we grow old.
So may we use times ceaseless track.
to bring us joy as we look back.Alex Cullum

Do you cry Why me? into the air
when you find your luck runs out?
Is the phrase, It isnt fair!
the one you will shout?
Or do you mind these words, so wise,
when you are in a mess,
Just give the job a few more tries
and you will find success ?Alex Cullum

Moving on and moving forward,
never standing still.
Always looking for the sunlight,
on that distant hill.
Keeping all our dreams alive,
as day comes after day.
Moving on towards the future.
Hope will find a way.Alex Cullum

If you can learn to forgive
when angry words are spoken.
If you can learn once more to live
after your heart is broken.
Then you will find that troubles cease,
your sorrow and grief take wings,
and you will know the blessed peace,
that only true contentment brings.Alex Cullum

Were happy when the days are fine
and free from any rain,
but when the ground becomes too dry
the gardeners all complain.
Then when it rains, youll hear folk groan
when they meet and come together.
But what would we all talk about
If it wasnt for the weather.Alex Cullum

A society of complainers
we seem to be today,
the minute goods or services
default in any way.
If we'd only act as swiftly
to praise a job well done,
we could make someone's daily grind
feel so much more like fun.Alex Cullum

Jumping to Conclusions
Molly was furious when her son, Terry came in plastered
with mud from head to toe. At 14 he should know better, she scolded.
Without giving him a minute to explain, she ordered him into the
bathroom, to take off his
mucky jeans and jacket, and jump into the bath.
Still fuming, she was stuffing the clothes into the washing machine, when the doorbell
rang.
It was a woman from down the street, known to Molly only by sight,
but evidently in some
distress.
She said shed come to give her heartfelt thanks to the young lad who had just saved
her little boys life. The five year old had wandered onto the mud at the
rivers edge and had been sinking fast when Terry had seen his plight and had gone to
his rescue in the nick of time.
He deserves a medal, she said.
When Terry came out of the bathroom, he was surprised to find that, instead of getting a
telling- off, he was hailed as a hero by his proud mum- who has promised that in future
she
wont jump to conclusions before hearing the whole story.

Remember, what you do today,
will be tomorrows memory.
So try to do whats good and kind,
dont let bad thoughts cross your mind.
Then, when the evening shadows fall,
you will have no regrets at all.
A good friend once said to me
" Be nice to people when you are on the way up
'cos sure as hell you'll meet 'em again
when you are on the way down.Alex Cullum

Botox injections, so they say,
will banish all your lines away,
but these are life-lines on your face,
reminders,so that you may trace
all the journeys you have had,
some so good,and others bad.
And now your eyes and happy smile,
will show you are proud of every mile.

Don't make mountains out of molehills,
keep things in perspective and
don't get annoyed whenever
simple things don't go as planned.
Grumbles and complaints please no one,
save your energy instead
and use it to solve major problems
which may, sadly, lie ahead.Alex Cullum

Gremlins live in our machines
And think it's just a game
To muddle up the works for us
Then gladly take the blame.
Or is that just a poor excuse
We use when things go wrong,
While in our hearts, we humans know
Where all these faults belongAlex Cullum
